The A-10 warthog served so well in Gulf war that one day 2 hogs destroyed 23 Iraqi tanks alone! But you don't always win, right? On February 15th, 1991, lieutenant colonel Rob sweet and his flight lead Captain Stephen R. Phillis, were on a mission to hunt the Iraqi Republican Guard tanks about 80 miles north of the border with Kuwait. Sweet was pretty nervous, because none of the A-10s had penetrated that deep into Iraqi airspace before. The Iraqis greeted them with heavy anti aircraft fire when they arrived over the mission area. The standing orders were to leave in such a situation to avoid being shot down. So they began to navigate away from the area, when they saw a row of tanks that had not been hit yet, because by then everything was bombed. They were so shocked, so they went in for an attack. This time Iraqis responded with a surface to air missile or SAM, that missed the A-10s. Sweet saw where the missile was fired from, and was about to hit the launch site when he felt a bump from behind. Sweet's A-10 was hit, and the right wing was in flames. Realizing he could not save the plane, Sweet ejected. Captain Phillis was also shot down and killed in action. Sweet was captured, but released 19 days later.
