June 29th 1987, an SR-71 was on a mission around the Baltic Sea to spy on Soviet activities when one of its engines exploded. The SR-71 was at the height of 75,000 feet, and quickly descended to 25,000 feet over the Swedish air space. Two armed Saab J A 37 Viggens on an exercise were ordered to intercept the intruder. About 70 kilometers east of Öland’s southern oceans, Viggens intercepted the blackbird. Meanwhile, a second pair of Viggens had been scrambled to relieve the first pair that would soon run out of fuel. Second pair escorted the SR-71 until the they reached the Danish airspace, and Blackbird successfully landed in the West Germany. The event had been classified for over 30 years, and when the report was unsealed, data from the NSA showed that multiple MiG-25s were ordered to shoot down the SR-71 right after the engine failure. One MiG-25 even locked a missile on the damaged SR-71, but didn't fire due to the Swedish escort. The four Swedish air force pilots received U.S. Air Medals on Nov. 28 2018, recognizing their heroic actions.
