This chapter explores how big global events—like the COVID-19 pandemic—and fast-growing technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) have changed higher education around the world. It reviews past research to understand how the pandemic disrupted student learning and research, especially for women and certain academic fields. At the same time, AI is helping education become more personalized and efficient, but it also raises concerns about privacy and fairness. The chapter points out gaps in current research, like too much focus on China and a lack of long-term or ethical studies. To move forward, it suggests more global and cross-disciplinary research, better access to AI tools for all, and clear rules to use AI responsibly.
