When playing Pikmin 4 this summer, I realized that the level of progression in the game was quite enjoyable; the pace the game had felt right and every day was a step forward in the bigger picture. This made me think about progression in games, how do developers calibrate and manage progression in all sorts of games, from small action adventure titles to massive RPGs. I ask myself the effect tools such as skills trees and levels & exp have within the progression and how much of an impact the player own personal development has when progressing a game. In other words, is it the player that gets good regardless of the game, or are there elements within the game that make progression more guided and balanced? I used frequently the example of Nintendo's Pikmin 4 but of course I explored how other games tackle this greater question. I hope you will enjoy the video! :)
