Lisa (Newton) is a lonely teen who is looking for love and purpose. She finds it - and more - in the resurrected corpse of a young man (Sprouse).
The story revolves around a young girl named Lisa Swallow, portrayed by actress Katherine Newton. She grieves for her mother, who was brutally murdered some time ago. After moving, she adjusts to a new city, a new school, and her father's marriage to the wicked stepmother, Nurse Janet. At school, Lisa is an outcast, and despite her stepsister Taffy's attempts to involve Lisa in normal life, she still prefers to spend time in the cemetery, reading next to the grave of a handsome pianist who died of unanswered love. One day, she accidentally wishes aloud to "be" with this deceased cemetery resident. When lightning strikes that part of the ground during a storm, the walking corpse of the pianist appears on Lisa's doorstep. She is briefly alarmed by this sight, but soon they become best friends.
It's funny to think about how Victor Frankenstein, the smart guy from Mary Shelley's story, would react to bringing to life someone as wild and lustful as Lisa Frankenstein. Director Zelda Williams and writer Diablo Cody make us feel like it's not that hard to understand: maybe the only reason to bring a dead body back to life is to make your lonely life feel important?
Lisa Frankenstein is called "the arrival of rage," which cleverly refers to both the original scary story about the ugly creature coming back to life and to a teenage ritual where a young girl tries hard to fit in. Lisa Swallows (played by Katherine Newton, funny with great timing) might not be everyone's favorite, but it wouldn't hurt to pay a bit more attention to her.
She makes up for her dull home life by seeking comfort in the nearby cemetery. She has a favorite grave—it's his. The Creature's name is never mentioned, but during a deadly storm, his body rises from the ground, and, well, Cole Sprouse ends up in Lisa's room.
In the genre exercises and the sheer charisma of the young stars, there's something intriguing, but Cody – undoubtedly one of the strongest screenwriters of our generation – gives Lisa and her lover so much to work with that everything may seem a bit tangled. Murder isn't really the end of the world; the revelation that a shaky tanning bed can revive the love of your life is just the first chapter. Will they stay together at all? Did anyone really deserve to die? Perhaps it's worth pondering how amusing all these horrors can be.
