With Metroid Dread having released just a couple weeks ago and me being a big fan of metroidvanias, I stomached the $80 CAD price tag of this latest entry in the Metroid franchise so that I could experience its comeback alongside everyone else. The mechanic that instantly jumped out to me, and a lot of other people, was centered around the EMMIs, evil foreboding robots that chase you down and try to put you in the dirt the second you enter their general area.

I think this mechanic was one of the most clever uses (and subversions) of metroidvania map design, and for a genre that's gotten quite comfortable in the past few years, this kind of shake up stands out in a way that shows us just how much room there is for these games to grow. Metroid Dread lives up to its name and gives us a Metroid game which turns its exploration into escape
