In Defense Of Linear Storytelling in Video Games
Although linear games continue to thrive in the video game industry and typically wind up winning a bunch of awards and landing on peoples top-of-the-year lists, there’s a bit of a sour attitude towards them displayed by a sizeable chunk of people. A lot of people believe these games are too restrictive or don’t require interactive media, and their stories should instead be told through movies or TV. While it’s totally fair if you’re not a fan of games like The Last of Us, Bioshock, God of War, or Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (among many others), I did think that certain aspects of these games and their narratives are overlooked in terms of just how much they truly require interactivity. I thought it would be a fun topic to talk about, so, here I am discussing it I guess. Let me know your thoughts in the comments, whether you agreed or disagreed, I’d love to get some other perspectives on the topic!
