Nintendo has created some of the most beloved gaming consoles of all time. But the path that led to their bestselling home console is maybe not what you expect. You see, the NES was a worldwide success, selling almost 62 million units - a number that competitors at the time couldn’t even get close to. But as time went on, each successive Nintendo console sold worse than the last, despite interest in gaming becoming more and more popular. But then, seemingly out of nowhere, Nintendo had an idea for a home console that captured the imagination and interest of the world. The Wii, with its easy-to-understand motion controls, was a phenomenon, selling over 100 million units. But, Nintendo was not able to keep up this momentum, as the Wii U marked the company’s lowest point yet. But out of the ashes of the Wii U, Nintendo refined its ideas and caught lightning in a bottle. The Switch and its hybrid design has excited both casual and hard-core gamers. And now, almost 5 years later, VGChartz estimates that the Switch has sold 101.88 million units in total. Making it the bestselling Nintendo home console of all time. What’s even more interesting is that Switch sales are still quite strong, making some wonder if it may eventually go on to pass the PlayStation 2 and take the title of bestselling gaming console ever.
