In this video, we’ll be looking at the basics of defending in Aoe2 when playing on open maps like arabia. If you find this video helpful please consider subscribing and do like the video and leave a comment as it will really help the channel to grow.
So, When I was asked by subscribers to make a video about how to defend in AOE2, I must admit, I was a bit unsure on how I would go about explaining this in a video because, as with most things in AOE2, it depends on the situation. There’s a lot of factors to include, the biggest one being your skill level vs your opponent. Other factors can include your civilisation vs your opponents civ, the map generation, the strategy your opponent is using and many more factors.
I’ve decided on discussing these main, generic areas:-
• Being aggressive yourself and choosing a strategy
• Civ choices and predictable strategies
• Maps
• walls
• Scouting information
• Unit counters and positioning
• Towers
Walls are very important in aoe2 in the current meta of the game so it’s important to think of where you can wall and start placing your buildings there so that they form part of the wall. This will save you time in walling up fully in the future. You will want to make sure that you have some villagers collecting resources close by so that they can easily build houses behind the walls if they are being attacked so that the enemy can’t get through.
Walls should ideally span between woodlines and other resources as this will save you time and wood as there is already a natural wall there. If you have walled and your opponent has just gone for a standard scout or archer rush, they will find it difficult to get through your walls.
If you have an open map and you cannot wall in time before the scouts attack, you could just build palisades around your resources rather than the whole base. This will stops the scout, militia or men at arms getting at you villagers.
Walls can be tricky and there’s no definitive answer as to when you should wall up. I would usually recommend starting to wall at the end of the dark age so that you are fully walled up by the time the enemy hits feudal age.
If your enemy is attacking with scouts and you haven’t walled, you can easily defend with a few well placed spearmen. A couple on stand ground or guard stance near each of your resources will probably be enough.
thankfully, you don’t see that many tower rushes nowadays since they were made weaker and easier to destroy. Walling up will help slow them down and getting in to your base. If they do get in to your base, you will want to build your own counter tower so that it prevents them advancing any further whilst you attack the tower with villagers. You may want to add a few villagers to stone in order to make more towers if you need to. you could also try to focus on just getting economy together in order to get to the castle age so that you can make knights and/or mangonels as they will tear down towers very quickly. Probably the most effective way is to just carry on with your normal rush and raid their economy because if they have done the standard 18 pop tower rush then they won’t have been able to wall up.
