Just a simple step by step tutorial showing you how to permanently delete your Windows hibernation system file if you don't need it for getting space back on your Windows boot drive or SSD.
I also show how to create or add back the Windows hibernation file in case you may need it at a later date.
Using the command prompt and command line interface CLI in admin mode, administrator mode. Allows you direct access to the hiberfil.sys system file so you can delete or restore, add it back. The hiberfil.sys file is basically a system cache file that stores the Windows hibernation data.
There are many reasons why you may want to delete the Windows hibernation hiberfil.sys file. Two reasons for me because I don't need the hibernation function, are:
1 - To reduce the space used on a small SSD or eMMC storage boot drive, as every gigabyte of spare space helps on small drives.
2 - It helps to reduce image sizes when making images of the Windows boot drive, I use Macrium Reflect for this.
1. Go to search on the bottom left of your Windows task bar.
2. type CMD.
3. The results will show Command Prompt.
4. Right clock over Command Prompt and select Runs as administrator.
5. Allow the app to make changes if asked.
6. To delete the hibernation hiberfil.sys file type "powercfg -h off" without the quotation marks.
7. To restore or add the hibernation hiberfil.sys file type "powercfg -h on" without the quotation marks.
