First thing, why would you want Minecraft shaders for Mac? Well, with shaders, you can completely change and improve the look of Minecraft. It adds in better lighting, increased ambiance with flowing grass and trees, and of course, shading that actually produces shadows in game.
To get started installing shaders on Mac, you need to download a shaders pack. There are thousands of shader packs out there, but in the description above, there is a list of the best shader packs that Minecraft has to offer. Now, it is worth noting that not all of these shader packs are Mac compatible. Thus, there is some trial and error when getting shader packs, especially on M1 and M2 Macs. For this reason, I would recommend downloading multiple shader packs for Mac and trying them all until you find one that works.
Once you have Shaders for Mac downloaded, we can move on to getting Optifine. Optifine for Mac is the mod that allows us to actually add and use shaders in-game. Without Optifine, you can’t install any shaders packs. You can find a link in the description above on exactly how to download and install Optifine for Mac in order to get shaders. It covers everything including how to fix any issues you may have with getting shaders on your Mac.
After you have Optifine installed, we need to get your shader packs ready for you to install on your Mac. Most likely, when you downloaded your shader packs, MacOS automatically unzipped them. If your shader packs are .zip files, you can skip this step. To zip your shaders, simply right-click on the folder and click compress. You should then have a .zip file of the shaders you downloaded.
We can now move on to how to install shaders on Mac in 2023. Start off by just opening up Minecraft with your Optifine for Mac installation. This is simple enough, and it is covered in our Optifine tutorial.
Then, from the Minecraft main menu, navigate to Options, Video Settings, Shaders. Then, click on the ‘Shaders Folder’ button in the bottom left. This will open your shaders folder. Now, all you need to do is drag-and-drop the shader files you downloaded into this shaders folder. It’s that easy to install shaders in Minecraft on Mac.
When you go back into Minecraft, you will see the shaders you installed. Just click on them, and click done. The shaders pack will activate. You can go back into the shaders menu and edit the shader settings in the bottom right by clicking the button there.
