A stuck green screen on Xbox Series X|S, often referred to as the "Green Screen of Death," is a frustrating issue indicating a problem with the console's operating system or potentially a hardware failure. The "best method" for fixing this involves a series of troubleshooting steps, starting with the simplest and escalating to more drastic measures if necessary.

Before You Begin: Understand the Green Screen
The green screen means the Xbox operating system is failing to load correctly. This could be due to a corrupted update, a bad game installation, an issue with the internal drive, or a deeper hardware problem.

The Best Method: Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Step 1: Hard Power Cycle (The Simplest Fix)
This often resolves temporary glitches.

Completely Power Off: Press and hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds until it fully shuts down and the power light goes out.

Unplug Power: Disconnect the power cable from the back of the Xbox Series X|S and from the wall outlet.

Wait: Wait for at least 30 seconds to 1 minute to ensure the console fully discharges any residual power.

Reconnect and Power On: Plug the power cable back in and press the Xbox button to turn the console on.
Check: See if the console boots past the green screen.

Step 2: Access the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter & Perform a Reset

If a hard power cycle doesn't work, you'll need to enter a special boot mode to access recovery options.

Completely Power Off: Press and hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds until it fully shuts down.

Unplug Power: Disconnect the power cable from the back of the Xbox Series X|S and from the wall outlet.

Wait: Wait for at least 30 seconds.
Reconnect Power.
Enter Startup Troubleshooter:

For Xbox Series X (with a disc drive): Press and hold the Pair button (on the front, near the USB port) AND the Eject button (on the disc drive) simultaneously.

For Xbox Series S (digital-only): Press and hold only the Pair button (on the front, near the USB port).

While holding these buttons, short press the Xbox button on the console once.

Listen for two power-up tones: Continue holding the Pair (and Eject, if applicable) buttons for about 10-15 seconds. You should hear two distinct "power-up" tones a few seconds apart. This indicates you've successfully entered the troubleshooter.

Release the buttons: Once you hear the second tone and see the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter screen, you can release the buttons.

Reset This Xbox:
Using your controller's D-pad and A button, select "Reset this Xbox."
You will be given two options:

"Keep my games & apps": This is the preferred option to try first. It will factory reset the console's operating system but attempts to preserve your installed games and apps. You will need to re-sign in to your profile and re-sync your cloud game saves.

"Remove everything": This performs a full factory reset, deleting all games, apps, and accounts. Only use this if "Keep my games & apps" fails. Your game saves are typically backed up to the cloud and will re-sync when you sign in, but you'll have to redownload everything.

Select your chosen reset option and follow the on-screen prompts.
Check: After the reset, see if the console boots normally.

Step 3: Perform an Offline System Update (OSU) via USB

If resetting the console doesn't work, the operating system might be severely corrupted and require a clean reinstallation. This is a more involved process.

What you'll need:

A Windows-based PC with an internet connection.
A USB flash drive with at least 6 GB of free space.
The USB flash drive MUST be formatted as NTFS.
