Android smartphones can lag over a few years because of multiple reasons.

The main reasons are often related to:
1. CPU overload
2. RAM issues
3. Internal Storage issues

Additionally, performance of the phone can be affected by:
1. Faulty battery
2. Faulty motherboard
3. Improper OS updates

Very old phones (more than 4 or 5 years old) by default will suffer from compatibility issues as new OS and new apps require phones that have updated hardware to run smoothly. Apps have also evolved and become hungry for memory and processor to execute smoothly. Hence, very old Android phones might lag simply because the hardware is not capable of keeping up with the apps and OS of today.

However, majority of issues that come in phones that are just 2-4 years old can be solved through various steps. Go through the video and see how identifying apps that consume a lot of RAM, storage or processing and removing them can greatly affect performance.

Periodically, deleting very old whatsapp or SMS or skype conversations that have a lot of messages in them can significantly improving quick launching of apps.

Monitoring background activity, data consumption through various apps on the Play Store can also help in discovering apps that are malicious and probably eating up memory and processing power thereby slowing down your Android smartphone.

Free up your phone's storage and ensure it is not clogged. Internal memory is often required by Android smartphones to launch apps quickly and execute tasks efficiently. Filling up your smartphone with content will clog your phone's performance. Use apps like ES Disk Analyzer to figure out content that's redundant and remove them.

Install LITE versions of apps like Facebook, Facebook messenger and so on to save on space. Use Hermit app to create lite version of some of the most popular smartphone apps and uninstall their actual app version to save space.

To improve the performance of your Android smartphone and make it faster, it is also imperative that you keep your apps and OS up to date. Sometimes, it can also be the cause of the problem - but that's only if your smartphone is very old and has lost the capability to support the new apps. Otherwise, always keep your OS and apps updated.

Also, keeping a clean and minimal homescreen with a simple wallpaper can be a great saving tip and speed up things.

Installing a third party homescreen replacement app like Nova, ADW, Aviate, Lawnchair or CPL Launcher can significantly improve performance and at the same time provide you with a plethora of customization and personalization options.

If nothing works, last resort:

1. Factory reset your phone - ensure you back up your phone with all the content in it
2. Replace your battery - sometimes old batteries start providing faulty voltage or current that degrades performance
3. Faulty motherboard or circuit issue - Hard luck! Buy a new phone instead.
