This video will show you how to install a game to Steam from a retail disc if you have not already installed the game and did not already use (or bind) the retail disc game code to Steam and have instead purchased a subsequent digital copy of the game from the Steam online store (this can occur if for example the game in question, complete with addon downloadable content, goes on special and purchasing the bundle (game and DLC) becomes cheaper than purchasing the DLC content alone to add to your base game.)
Registering two different game codes to Steam simply nullifies one of the codes, rendering it unusable, whereas if you never bind your retail game disc registration serial code to Steam, you can then use it in the future if you wish to make a subsequent or different Steam account, or if you wish to give it to someone (such as a gift) or if you wish to sell it. This can be done since you already have a game registration code from the downloadable game version you purchased online FROM Steam (this automatically binds to your Steam account when you buy a game on Steam).
Doing this avoids the need to download the base or core game files off of Steam, seeing as you already have the core game files on retail disc. This can be especially beneficial for those on slow internet connections or those who have to pay for download bandwidth usage.
Once the base or core game files are installed from the retail disc, any updates or DLC that you own the rights to will automatically download and install from Steam.
