This is literally just a two minute video of me making a Thumbnail for a Five Nights at Freddy's video I posted earlier today. This video pretty much shows the process I go through whenever I create a Thumbnail for Five Nights at Freddy's or any other game I may be playing.
I do it in three steps:
1. Main Image and Main Text
First, I select an image that I feel will represent the video best, then I choose 4 or 5 keywords from the title to put below or next to the main image. It's usually a pretty good idea to make the words you choose pretty big so they're easy to see. Thumbnails on YouTube are 1280x720, which sounds big, but when condensed down to thumbnail size it's pretty small, so you want to be sure your text can be read.
2. Background and Extra Graphics/Pictures
Next I layer on the Background and any extra graphics I might want to add to the thumbnail (Sunbursts, extra pictures, ect.).
The background should usually be darkened or a dark colour to begin with to help the main image and text stand out. After all, they are the main part of the thumbnail. Background and extra graphics are just there to help it look complete.
3. Finishing touches related to the theme.
And finally, I finish off the thumbnail by adding small graphics such as the eyes and blush in this video, and adding effects to the images and text such as shadows.
And by then the thumbnail is pretty much good to go. I resize it to 1280x720 then upload it onto the video. Simple as that!...kinda.
