About this video: This video will show you how to make a Paper server in 1.20.1. Why would you want to create a Minecraft Paper server? Well, with a Paper MC server, you can add plugins to your server while also getting a performance boost over vanilla or even Bukkit and Spigot servers. As far as plugins go, any Bukkit or Spigot 1.20.1 plugins will work on Paper servers.
First things first, you need to download the PaperMC server file. You can find a link to download Paper for Minecraft 1.20.1 in the description above. That will actually take you to our text tutorial for getting Paper. Once you are there, click the “Download Paper” button to be taken to Paper’s official download page.
On the Paper 1.20.1 download page, click the “Paper 1.20.1” download button to start the PaperMC server file downloading. You may need to keep or save the file.
Then, create a new “Paper 1.20.1 Server” folder on your desktop. Then, rename the paper folder you downloaded to simply “paper”. From there, right-click and create a new “Text Document”. Open this document and copy and paste the code from the description, depending on how much RAM you have.
Save this text file and name it “run.bat”. Make sure to set the “Save Type As” to the “All Files” options. You will now have a run/run.bat file depending if you have file extensions on. Double-click on this file, and your Paper 1.20.1 server will try to start. However, it will fail.
This is because you need to agree to the eula. You will now have an eula.txt file. Open this file in notepad and change “eula=false” to “eula=true”. Save the file.
Now, you can start your server by double-clicking the run.bat file. This will make the server start. Your world folder will appear as well as the plugins folder. Art this point, you can join your server using the IP “localhost”. However, if you want your friends to join, we will need to port forward.
Specifically, you will need to forward port 25565 on the TCP and UDP protocol on the computer/IPv4 address. This is required in order for your friends to join. Once you do port forward, your friends will be able to join using the public IP address.
You can also install plugins on your Paper server. Just add them to the “plugins” folder in your server’s directory. Then, restart your server and the plugins will be active!
