About this video: Minecraft is one of the most RAM intensive games out there, and this video shows you exactly how to add more RAM to Minecraft 1.20.1 in order to reduce lag and stop crashes in Minecraft. This will work with vanilla and modded Minecraft in 1.20.1 and allow you to allocate more RAM to Minecraft no matter what.

First things first, how much RAM does Minecraft really need? Well, that depends on what you plan to use Minecraft for. For vanilla Minecraft, you need 2GB of RAM. You can add more, but vanilla Minecraft will run on 2GB in most cases without any issues.

Things change a big when you start moving on to modded Minecraft. For shaders and under 50 mods, 4GB of RAM will be good. For 50-150 mods, you need 8GB, and for anything over 150 mods, 8GB of RAM is recommended. Things can vary widely depending on the mods you are running though, and some packs by run on 6GB even if the y have over 150 mods due to the mods being used. Generally, though, the above guide will help you dedicate how much ram to dedicate to Minecraft 1;20.1.

Now that you know how much RAM to added to Minecraft, there is one more thing to consider - the amount of RAM you have in your computer. Open up the Start Menu, and search for “System Information”. Open this, and you will see your RAM. You should add more than 50% of your computer's total RAM to Minecraft. So if you have 16GB of RAM, the max would be 8GB.

With all of that out of the way, here is how to add more RAM to Minecraft 1.20.1. Start off by opening up the Minecraft Launcher.

In the Minecraft Launcher, select the “Installations” tab at the top. Then, find the Minecraft installation you want to add more RAM to. Every installation has its own RAM settings. Hover over it, click the three dots, and click “Edit”.

Scroll down and click the “More Options” button. Finally, scroll down more and locate the “JVM Arguments” text box.

At the beginning of this text box, you will see “-Xmx2G” or “-Xmx4000M”. The numbers may be different depending on how much RAM is dedicated to Minecraft. Change theses numbers to increase RAM. If you have the “M” number, I would change this to “2G”, “3G”, “4G” etc removing the number and the “M”. This corresponds with how much RAM Minecraft 1.20.1 will have dedicated to in in GB.

Save after you have made the change and launch Minecraft. In game, press F5 on your keyboard. This will allow you to see how much RAM is allocated to Minecraft in the top right. This should correspond with how much RAM you added in the Minecraft Launcher.

With that being said, that is how to dedicate more RAM to Minecraft 1.20.1. If you have any questions about how to allocate more RAM in Minecraft, let us know in the comments. We will try to help you out.
