How to make Scotland GOOD at football
November 30, 1872 was the date. Hamilton Crescent cricket ground in Partick, Glasgow was the venue. Scotland and England were the teams of the first official international football match.
If they were so ahead of the curve, then why do they constantly suffer from the same ailments in the year of our Lord 2022?
Scotland can’t get out of a tournament group phase to save their lives. They hold the record for the most World Cup appearances without playing a knockout game: 8 tournaments, or 23 matches. Does this get better in the Euros? No. 3 tournaments and nine matches there.
And what of England? Well, their penalty shootout record is abysmal. They might slink out from the sludge and record a token win, be it against Spain at EURO 96 or Colombia in the 2018 World Cup. When it comes to when it matters, say, semi-finals against Germany or quarter finals against Portugal or—obviously—the Euro 2020 final against Italy, they come unstuck.
This week, we reverse both curses, and potentially create two super teams.
