Some notes:

It's very liberating to have a good jump range. Note just how much easier the trip from Vequess to Sol was, compared to the reverse journey in part 2. I get to pick the trading routes that are actually good, instead of the ones a crappy jump distance forces me to use.

The mystery of Arexack (planet "No Fun Allowed") is actually explained in the gazetteer that came with the game; they're basically Space Mormons: https://www.frontierastro.co.uk/Gazetteer/arexack.html

At the end of this video, I finaly have a ship that I'd consider to be suitable for playing the game. It's still not quite finished (needs a military drive to free up space for trading), but it's almost there. A Cobra 3 is the first ship that has enough space to reasonably fit all the equippmeent I want: Naval ECM means I won't have to do nearly as much missile dodging, 3 shields is enough to simply ram many troublesome small enemies, and space isn't so tight that I have to worry about the single tons used up by a scanner or a hyperspace analyser. I have an insane hyperspace range, enough equipment to not die easily, and - once I upgrade the drive - I'll still have more empty space for trading than the Viper did.

There's just one problem - it took me 4 hours to get this far! Compare that to Privateer, where it only takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to get your Centurion, and the starting Tarsus isn't close to being as bad as the Eagle Mk1.

It is possible to get to this stage a bit faster - by trading up to an adder or viper in the Sol-Barnard's milk run before visiting more exciting systems - but that's an even more boring start. And I need an Elite rating of at least "Above Average" to qualify for the more lucrative tier of assassination missions, so all that time fighting in the Old World systems wasn't exactly wasted.
