Lima is the capital of Peru and its fifth-largest city. It is located in the central coastal part of the country on the Pacific Ocean, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) off the country's main Pacific port, Callao. Lima is the most populous city in Peru and the third-largest in the Americas (after São Paulo and Mexico City). With a population of more than 9 million, Lima is the most populous metropolitan area of Peru and the fourth-largest city in the Americas.

Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535, as Ciudad de los Reyes (City of the Kings). Although it was destroyed by a series of earthquakes in the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the mid-to-late 16th century under the direction of viceroy Francisco de Toledo. Lima acquired its name in 1563, when a new viceroy, Marquess of Cañete, named it Ciudad de Lima.
