Mariupol is a city in southeastern Ukraine. The city is located on the north coast of the Sea of Azov, close to the Azov-Kerch Strait. Mariupol has a population of 487,000 (2017 est.) and is the tenth-largest city in Ukraine.

Mariupol was founded by a decree of Empress Catherine the Great in 1778 as a naval fortress and shipbuilding center. It was originally named after the Empress' consort, Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich. The city was occupied by the Germans in 1918 and by the Soviets in 1919. It was renamed after the revolutionary leader Maxim Gorky in 1919. It was occupied by the Germans again in 1941 and liberated by the Red Army in 1943.

The city is an important industrial center and is the home of Azovstal, one of Ukraine's largest steel mills. Mariupol has a seaport and is the base for the Ukrainian Navy's Azov Squadron.
