This video will show you how to retrieve (how to free) a stuck jammed VHS video cassette tape from a VCR. This video showcases the JVC VP674U, however this should work with the grand majority of VHS video cassette recorders. On one end of the tape loading mechanism there is a belt-driven system attaching a motor and spindle to gear cogs. By manually turning the spindle, it will slowly actuate the gear cogs that will cause the tape loading mechanism to raise, thus freeing the jammed tape by raising it to the level of the front loading bay.
Note that an opened lid JVC VHS VCR will not successfully play back a video cassette tape, rather, when the power button is pressed, the video cassette recorder will seem to play the video cassette tape back at a high speed automatically for a few seconds, despite showing no output on the television display screen and despite not responding to any commands or any pressed buttons. This is due to the fact that the JVC VHS VCR is going through a power-on self test diagnostic mode, and will only operate properly with the housing cover in place (with the unit completely closed up).
