Hi. I'm Max Dalton, and in this video I'm going to talk through how you can set time limits on your child's Xbox One account to ensure they don't spend the rest of their life playing video games.
The Xbox One is a great way for kids to take a break. It can also be a great tool for helping them think more creatively about solving problems. However, it's not healthy for them to spend all of their time playing video games, and enforcing time limits by going off of just what you can see can be difficult. Thankfully, Microsoft makes it possible to set time limits on your child's Xbox One profile that's linked to a parent or guardian's Microsoft family account on the console. Setting up and modifying the time limits can be done through your Microsoft account on a Web browser. Parents have the ability to limit the total number of hours a child can play, and the time ranges during which they can play, for every day of the week.
Please note that if you haven't already set up accounts for your children that are associated with your Microsoft Xbox Live account, you'll need to do that before you can work through the rest of this video. The link to a video that will walk you through that process is included in the description for this video. Come back to this video after you've done that.
And now, let's walk through the steps to set time limits on how long your kids can play the family Xbox One.
Step 1. Open your Web browser and navigate to account.microsoft.com. Click "Sign In" in the upper right corner of the screen. Enter the username and password assocaited with the Microsoft account that's associated with your Xbox Live account, and then click "Sign In." You'll arrive at your Microsoft Account home screen.
Step 2. Click "Family" in the row of options that appear along the top of the screen. The Your Family screen appears, displaying a list of all the family members you've set up to be associated with your Xbox Live account.
Step 3. Locate the account associated with the child that you want to limit Xbox One play time for, and then click the blue "Screen Time" link in the row of options that appears beneath their name. A profile window for that child appears, with options for restricting screen time on any devices their account is associated with.
Step 4. Set the toggle to the right of Xbox Screen Time to "On." A Screen Time Schedule expands beneath this section. This schedule illustrates the number of hours per day your child is allowed to play the Xbox One, and also the time range within which they can use that time.
Step 5. Click the default "Max Scheduled" to the right of any day you want to restrict the total amount of time your child can play the Xbox One to. A drop-down menu appears. Choose "Blocked" if you don't want your child to play at all on that specific day, or choose one of the other options for how much total time they can play the Xbox One during that day. After making your selection, the drop-down menu will close and you'll see your selection reflected in the Hours Allowed column.
Step 6. Click the block time row to the far right of a specific day to modify the time range within which your child can use their allowed Xbox One time. A dialog box appears. Use the From and To fields to define a new time range on that day where your child can play the Xbox One, and then click "Add." Your options will appear in the lower part of the dialog box as you add them. Additionally, you can click "Remove" to the right of any options you need to get rid of. Click the blue "Save" button when you're done. You'll return to the previous screen, where you'll see your changes reflected in the time that's blocked out in that row.
Step 7. Repeat this process to set time limits for all of the remaining days. When you're finished, there's no need to worry about saving anything before leaving the site, as all of your changes are saved as you make them.
Congratulations! You've successfully set time limits on your child's Xbox One profile that's associated with your family account.
