This will work with all versions of Minecraft clients, as long as you have the corresponding server file version.

The free version of Hamachi allows up to 5 players on your server. I believe the cost of a 20 player limit is around $20/year, which is still less than you would pay to rent a server.

Performance of a Hamachi-Minecraft server seems to be pretty good. From my experience, it seems to be lag free, as long as the host's internet connection is good.
