How to SIDECHAIN in REASON (Tutorial)
Today, Let's talk about how we can create the sidechain compression effect in 4 different ways using Reason.
Side Chain Compression is probably the tool I am using the most in my tracks!
Let's start with a simple pretty boring and flat bass line.
A first and old way to achieve that is with volume automation. Let's bounce this midi track to an audio track. I already had my automation but this is a long and definitely not efficient process indeed any adjustment will take time
Let's try another way now using an LFO
I'm duplicating the bass track, then I am using one of my favorite utility: the Pulsar Dual LFO in my channel insert FX rack then let's flip the rack and connect the LFO CV output into the mix channel CV Level input
Now I can sync the tempo and simulate the same effect with more granularity.
it's fun to play with different LFO waveform Shape too .
Another quick way is to use the stock plugin synchronous,
I am duplicating the track again, I am adding the plugin in the FX rack then I am using the preset sidechain and that's it.
I just shown you 3 different way to "emulate" the sidechain effect. Now let's see how to create a real one!
I am duplicating the bass track one more time. And now in the channel FX section, I am adding the built in compressor.
Then I drag and drop an instance of redrum under the compressor while holding left shit key to avoid any auto routing. Inside the redrum I will use the main kick I am using on my tracks (a nice o nice) is a good one and create a pattern for my effect : here a basic 4 to the floor.
Then after flipping the rack : I m routing the output of the redrum into the sidechain input of the compressor. Now my ghost kick will send a real signal to the compressor to trigger the amount of compression to the bass. The threshold, attack and delay then will help to tweak the compressor to have the desirable effect
When I need to apply this effect in multiple devices I just reuse and duplicate my combinator.
if you have resources issues , let me know in comment and I can show you how to use only one instance of redrum.
