There are 4 main parts to a speed run of an RPG or any game in general as follows: Menus, Battles, Mashing, and Movement.
FIRST are Menus. Menuing in speedruns is something far too overemphasized in practice. Most games simply don't have enough menus to require insane amounts of practice time outside of someone going for a top time or world record. These will usually boil down to just following your notes, and as long as someone has accurate notes, menuing is something worth saving to practice until much more proficient at their game of choice.
SECOND are Battles. Battles, while necessary to get through the game, will typically amount to more or less the same strategy throughout the entirety of the run. Some exceptions or slight exceptions to this could be something such Dragon Quest 8 or Chrono Cross where there is a lot more RNG to account for in each run. These sorts of game, yes, battles should be more of a priority in practice. But in most video games, saving battle practice until later (again with decent notes to follow) is highly advisable.
THIRD is mashing. This one is so undervalued in speedrun circles because it is sometimes thought of as not being a skill. But it can be developed and it does impact someone's final time in their game of choice (outside of games where you can skip cutscenes) tremendously. Even in games where there is not that much text, the person that tries throughout the entirety of the speedrun to mash as fast as possible will inevitably save time over the person that casually taps their controller.
FOURTH is Movement. Similar to mashing, movement is one of those fundamentals that can't be escaped and is either the same or nearly the same from run to run. Striving for perfection in movement should be one of first things someone does in learning a speedrun of a role playing game as it doesn't differ all that much from run to run and there is simply so much of it. Even without knowing precise inputs for every screen, just knowing what each screen looks like or the general idea of where to go next impacts someone's final time so much more than being perfect at battles or menus or even mashing.
