Some say Xenogears is a slow game. They are right. But it doesn't have to be. Thanks to FFMaster's work on a GameShark code I found, we now have an answer to speeding up Xenogears significantly.
FIRST you will need a working PlayStation 1 or 2, a controller, a physical copy of the game, a PlayStation 1 Memory Card with 2 blocks of data available, and a GameShark Lite.
SECOND you will need to boot the the GameShark Lite disc. If playing on a PlayStation 2 Slim, you will need to do random inputs to slip past the intro screen into the main menu. Otherwise it will freeze here and audio will blare through your speakers of some kid from the 90s.
THIRD will be inputting the codes. You first will need to create a new game profile for Xenogears as it is not one of the presets. After doing this, it is time to input the aforementioned codes. Make sure to turn them on after saving them as it will not work otherwise.
FOURTH step is starting up the game. Exit back to the main menu and "start game with selected codes." After putting in the Xenogears disc and closing the tray and pressing X, the game should load normally. Choose new game or whatever file you are playing from.
FIFTH is to sit back and feel the speed. This works EVERYWHERE in the game and makes replaying it much less of a chore than it would otherwise be.
The benefits of this code for both old and new players is multi-fold. Average playtime of a Xenogears playthrough is 62.5 hours. This takes of roughly 21 of those hours with the fast text and even more with a completionist mindset. The only drawback of this is not getting absorbed into the story as much as is possible with the normal doddering text speed.
There are a few known issues in regards to the game having difficulty with the code. Three revolve around same thing which is just not mashing too fast in the following places: Bledavik(Aveh) (when you enter the first time) - ending dialog too quick causes the lock - wait until they enter the base to finish the text. The last line is "Yes Sir" by Miang. There is no time loss in waiting before that, since they have to walk up to Margie's room. Ethos HQ - camera panning causes the lock - Wait when Verlaine talks after Jessie appears for the camera to pan fully and stop. The last word in the message when this should be done is when Verlaine says "Bishop". Zohar modifier scene - water ripples cause the lock - When Fei says "Alright, I'll defeat Deus... And save Elly" pause for about a second for the camera to pan out and for the water ripples to stop completely.
The other minor issues I have noticed are just avoiding rotating camera mindlessly during cutscenes where you have no control of the party. Second is you MUST always boot up the GameShark Lite disc and turn the codes back on each time you begin playing again. It does not save to save files.
I hope this GameShark code brings a higher quality of life experience the next time you play Xenogears. It's a timeless classic and getting through it in a more timely manner is a true godsend after all these years.
