How to Start into Troubleshoot Mode on Xbox Series X|S to Reset or Update (Best Method)
0The Best Method: Entering the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter.
This method uses a specific button combination to force the console into its recovery environment.
Completely Power Off Your Xbox Series X|S:
Press and hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds until it fully shuts down. The power indicator light on the console will turn off.
Crucial: Do NOT just briefly press the button to put it in standby mode. You need a complete shutdown.
Unplug the Power Cable (Important for a Clean Start):
Disconnect the power cable from the back of your Xbox Series X|S and from the wall outlet.
Wait for at least 30 seconds to 1 minute. This allows the console to fully discharge any residual power, ensuring a true cold boot into the troubleshooter.
Reconnect the Power Cable:
Plug the power cable back into the console and the wall outlet.
Enter Troubleshooter Mode (The Key Button Combination):
Identify your console type:
For Xbox Series X (which has a disc drive): You will use the Pair button (the small, circular button on the front of the console, usually near the USB port) AND the Eject button (the small button next to the disc drive slot).
For Xbox Series S (digital-only, no disc drive): You will use only the Pair button (the small, circular button on the front of the console, near the USB port).
Perform the button press:
Press and hold the Pair button (and the Eject button if you have a Series X) simultaneously.
While still holding these buttons, short press the Xbox button on the console once.
Listen for Two Power-Up Tones:
Continue holding the Pair (and Eject, if applicable) buttons.
You will hear a "power-up" tone immediately (the first one).
Keep holding the buttons. After about 10-15 seconds, you will hear a second "power-up" tone. This second tone is the indicator that you have successfully entered the troubleshooter mode.
Release the Buttons:
Once you hear the second tone, you can release the Pair and Eject buttons.
