51. Check Your Xbox Live/Game Pass Subscription (Most Common Cause)
Many games require an active Xbox Game Pass Core (formerly Xbox Live Gold) or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription to access online multiplayer. Free-to-play games are generally an exception and do not require a subscription.
How to check:
Press the Xbox button to open the Guide.
Go to Profile & system (your gamertag icon) Settings.
Select Account Subscriptions.
Verify that your Xbox Game Pass Core/Ultimate subscription is Active and not expired. If it's expired, you'll need to renew it to play most online multiplayer games.
2. Adjust Xbox Privacy Settings (Crucial for Multiplayer Access)
Your Xbox privacy settings determine who you can play with and how you interact online. If these are too restrictive, you won't be able to join multiplayer games.
How to check and enable:
Press the Xbox button to open the Guide.
Go to Profile & system (your gamertag icon) Settings.
Select Account Privacy & online safety.
Select Xbox privacy.
Choose View details & customize.
Select Communication & multiplayer.
Crucially, ensure the following settings are set to "Allow" or an appropriate option:
"You can join multiplayer games": This must be set to Allow. If it's blocked, you cannot join any multiplayer games.
"You can join cross-network play": If you want to play with people on other platforms (like PlayStation or PC in crossplay-enabled games), this should be Allow. If it's blocked, you'll only play with other Xbox players, which can sometimes lead to longer matchmaking times.
"You can communicate outside of Xbox Live with voice & text": If you want to use in-game voice chat or party chat with players on other networks, this should be Allow.
"Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites": Set this to Everyone or Friends depending on who you want to be able to send you game invites or chat. If it's blocked, you might not receive invites.
