How To Turn On NFC on iPhone (Easy Method)
Near Field Communication (NFC) is built into iPhones starting with the iPhone 6, primarily for features like Apple Pay, contactless payments, and reading NFC tags. Unlike some Android devices, iPhones don’t have a manual on/off switch for NFC in the Settings app, as it’s automatically enabled for supported features under specific conditions (e.g., when the screen is on or during payment).
However, you may need to enable or configure certain NFC-related functions, such as NFC tag reading, depending on your iPhone model and iOS version. Below are the steps to ensure NFC is active and usable on your iPhone.
Steps to Use NFC on iPhone
Verify NFC Support:
Ensure your iPhone supports NFC. Compatible models include iPhone 6 and later (e.g., iPhone 6, 7, 8, X, XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and SE models from 2016 onward).
Check iOS Version:
Update your iPhone to the latest iOS version for full NFC functionality, especially for tag reading. Go to Settings - General - Software Update and install any available updates.
Enable NFC for Apple Pay (Payments):
NFC is automatically active for Apple Pay when you set it up:
Open Settings - Wallet & Apple Pay.
Add a credit or debit card by following the prompts.
To use Apple Pay, double-click the Side button (or Home button on older models), authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode, and hold the top of your iPhone near an NFC-enabled payment terminal.
No manual NFC toggle is needed; it activates when the phone is near a compatible reader.
