With the rollout of iOS 12, Apple introduced the ability for users to create a cartoon face after their own likeness -- called Memoji. After you create your Memoji, there are a couple of different things you can do with it in your iPhone's Messages app. You can apply your Memoji to either replace your head or the head of someone else while taking a picture or capturing a video in your iPhone's Messages app. While the Memoji is applied to a person, it will replicate that person's face using the TrueDepth camera system. After you capture the perfect picture or video, you can then send it to a person or group of people through the Messages app.

First, let's walk through how to use your Memoji in photos taken from within the Messages app.

Step 1. Launch the "Messages" app on your iPhone, and either open an existing message thread, or tap the "New Message" icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Step 2. Tap the "Camera" icon to the left of the field where you would normally enter text. The Camera app launches within Messages.

Step 3. Tap the icon to switch to the front facing iPhone camera if you want to take a selfie and apply your Memoji. Alternatively, you can use the rear-facing camera to apply the Memoji to someone else.

Step 4. Tap to select the "Effects" icon in the lower left corner of the screen. The Effects icon looks like a star or a starfish. A new row of icons appears along the bottom of the screen.

Step 5. Tap the "Animoji" icon. The Animoji icon features a monkey. A row of your available Memoji and Animoji appear for you to swipe through. Your created Memoji will appear at the front part of this list.

Step 6. Swipe through the available options, and then tap to select the Memoji you want to apply to your picture. Tap the small "X" in the upper right part of the Animoji screen to close the Animoji window. The Take Picture button should reappear, and you should now see your chosen Memoji appearing in place of your head, or the head of someone in your picture frame.

Step 7. Tap the "Take Picture" button to take your picture. The Take Picture button disappears after your picture is captured, and replaced with a Send Picture button. The Send Picture button looks like a blue circle with an upward pointing arrow.

Step 8. Tap the "Send Picture" button. You'll return to your Messages window, where the picture you took featuring your Memoji will be sent to whoever is in your chat thread.

Step 3. Tap the icon to switch to the front facing iPhone camera if you want to take a video of yourself and apply your Memoji. Alternatively, you can use the rear-facing camera to apply the Memoji to someone else in your video.
