OSX Mountain Lion's Disk Utility has a bug where if you try to zero wipe an NTFS formated drive, it is unable to do it, and the security options don't work and gives an error. The trick is to format it to HFS, then format it AGAIN, this time the zero wipe options will work. So just format it WITHOUT security the first time, THEN format it again a second time with security zero wipe. This is for secondary drive. Note that if you are trying to use the NTFS as main drive for the installation of OSX, however, it won't work. As it will install the operating system right after the no security format (no zero wipe).
