Around 15 hours 42 minutes to beat. This was one of the harder NES games I completed , on default settings. Metal Storm on Expert would be at the top of that list. I would also probably place Ninja Gaiden 3 above this one, as limited lives and continues are a big annoyance of mine, challenge wise. Though this game has some of the hardest single sections Ive played on the NES. What makes this game so difficult is those four hardest stages. The rest of the game didnt give me too much trouble, but those four stages can be pretty extreme. The hardest stage for me was Stage 8-2, the ocean stage. That one took me around 3 hours to beat. Stage 8-3 was a close second taking close to 2 1/2 hours to beat. In third would be stage 7-4 at 2 hours 8 minutes. 8-1 took around 1 hour 20 minutes and was harder for me than the final stage, 8-4 which only took 42 minutes , surprisingly. All the spider jump practice from 7-4 helped cut that time down. There were other challenging parts but no single stages that took too long. The big challenge with some of the harder stages is that they require a pacifist run, meaning NO WEAPONS GIVEN. The only way around this is to bring a weapon from the previous stage and keep it without dying, but that never happened for me. As a result you will see the hardest stages completed without a weapon. There is some very awkward jump timings on a few parts as well as controls that feel like youre on ice constantly. The hardest single parts are the bat jump in 8-3 and a swordfish jump in stage 8-2. I will break down all of my strats in this tutorial version. The main thing being, how to beat the hardest stages with no weapons and timing some of the hardest jumps.

All sets of lives where no progress was made are edited out. If you see a Game Over or State Loaded notification, this means that I started the stage over on a fresh set of lives. Most of the time that was the case. The game has unlimited continues if you collect the Hudson Bee item in Stage 1-1, which is what I did. Rarely did I beat multiple stages without having to go out to the continue screen. Maybe some of the early stages, but that was about it.
