Sail VR development is going really well!!! Our development team has just delivered us a nearly complete sandbox of one of the most important game loops in Sail which we are calling bounty hunts.
In the bounty hunt game mode a player will be able to select a pirate captain to hunt down from a wall of posters and upon accepting the hunt will then be alerted to the last known location of the captain. The player can then sail to the location and look for any sign of the pirate captain. If they run into the captains cronies they will have to engage in naval combat in order to get a clue to where the captain went. Once the player follows the clues to the captain they will first have to defeat the captain in naval combat in order to disable his ship. Once the ship is disabled the player will need to board the ship and defeat waves of enemy pirates until the captain joins the battle. If the player can beat the captain and his crew in hand to hand combat the player will receive the bounty reward and loot from the defeated captain's horde of treasure.
We are pretty close to being able to push a build out to the community for testing and feedback. However there are a few key components that still need to be implemented before we do so. One of the key things that can be seen in this gameplay is smarter A.I. We have great enemy behaviors for both land and sea enemies that just need to be brought over into this project so we can experience the full scope of what Sail will have to offer.
Along with the AI we also need to refine some of the smaller interactions on the pirate ship. The cannons will eventually be aimed using your hands and both the sail adjustment wheel and anchor will be replaced with single hand cranks like what is currently available in the pre-alpha demo. We also need to add in the crew system that will allow you to command others to do tasks around the ship.
But once we have all those implemented in one spot and test it internally we'll be ready for our Beta Testers to start trying it out and give us feedback.
