You know, I hate to admit this, but so far, I think there are two things about Final Fantasy 7 I liked slightly more than FF9. For starters, it felt like you had more control over your party in FF7. Maybe that was because you had a smaller party in general and more characters at a time, but in FF9, it feels like a lot of the time, you're forced to use a specific party.
Likewise, it feels like during many points of FF9, I'm being constantly railroaded in a specific direction. Normally, I wouldn't mind this nearly as much, but it seems like I manage to miss certain items that aren't recoverable just due to the fact the game will often hijack the gameplay and force you into a string of non-playable segments. If I cared more, it would probably cause me to shy away from even attempting to make progress on my own.
Turns out my prediction about getting all the party members by the end of Disc 2 was wrong. Oh well. I did enjoy going to the Black Mage Village. The unknown continent area seems pretty interesting, albeit a little annoying to navigate at times.
