Hey, so I never played the original Metroid Prime on the Gamecube, I doubled down on my mistake and didn't play it when it was re-released for the Wii either. Come 2023 and Metroid Prime Remastered has come to the Switch, and I am not missing this for the third time.
Well, I tell a lie, *gasp* back in the Gamecube days, I played a few minutes of my brother's Metroid Prime but the only thing I can remember was that the controls were weird. You'd have to move, turn, and aim all using only the left analogue while holding the shoulder buttons to swap between moving and aiming. I think it's great that this classic control scheme is an option for returning players but I personally prefer the newly added modern controls that allow me to move and aim with the left and right analogue sticks.
So the Metroid series started as a 2D side-scroller from Nintendo and just like Mario, Zelda, Kirby - Metroid successfully makes the transition from 2D to 3D. We play Samus the bounty hunter as she hunts down some space pirates and their experiments on Tallon IV.
So from 2D to 3D, they've managed to re-capture what made Metroid so fun in the first place, no way makers showing you where to go but at the same time level design that rewards exploration, and the feeling of constant progression - you're constantly finding new upgrades or abilities that keep things fresh and.. Keep you addicted. One of my favourite upgrades is the Space Jump Boots that allow you to double jump, which about 5 hours into the game is a real upgrade to your mobility and a nice change of pace. And I like the Super Missile upgrade too, it allows you to charge up and fire 5 missiles at once for a deadly attack. There's a bit of risk reward to this upgrade, if you miss or a boss deflects your shot then you've wasted 5 missiles.
There's something really satisfying about remembering an obstacle or a door you couldn't get through earlier in the game and once you get the right upgrade or ability you can go back and get that treasure or open a new path. It's like I'm being rewarded for paying attention.
Hey, I'm trying to grow the channel. I'm trying to reach 1000 subs so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
So... exploration, Metroid Prime's world is broken down into half a dozen different Biomes, with different environments, visuals, creatures, and sounds. There's some really chill and atmospheric music, the sounds of the Phendrana Drifts really immerses you into the cold snowy biome. The main menu theme gives me Goosebumps. Even though I didn't originally play Metroid Prime, it actually gives me nostalgia for Smash Bros Melee, where some of the music is re-used. Those were good times.
No way markers and no dialogue nagging you to go a certain direction. I love it, the entire story is told without a single word of English spoken, well apart from a tiny bit of narration during the opening and ending. Samus is a silent protaganist and it only adds to the atmosphere of being alone and exploring these alien locations. You learn about the world and what's been happening through your environment and scanning objects, you're discovering the story and putting the pieces together yourself and it's just really immersive as opposed to other games where the story is thrown at you through long winded dialogue or overly done cinematics.
So with more complicated level design and no way markers, you're eventually going to get lost and be wondering where you should go next to progress or find a new upgrade. And I definetly did get lost a few times, but the game will eventually give you a little hint marker on the map to suggest you might be missing something in a certain area. I usually appreciated these little hints and I didn't find them too intrusive, for one you're not directly guided to this marker, and it can disrupt the pacing if you end up spending hours re-tracing areas for something you might have missed.
One of the later areas Prozon Mines was a step up in difficulty with some of the more challenging swarms of pirate enemies. It was a bit of a survival gauntlet...
