Hello there! I’m MtPain27, and this is Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Ichinichi - hey, I recognize that music! - the sophomore solo megawad by TheMightyWhoosh released earlier this year. A devoted classicist, Whoosh has so far worked exclusively with IWAD textures and MIDIs in his releases; Doom II and both halves of Final Doom are clearly his biggest mapping inspirations. I confess, I'm not too fond of his debut megawad, KINDa, which is infamous for its resource starvation, obtuse progression choices, and hitscanner overindulgence, but Ichinichi represents an evilution of Whoosh's process. Not counting tinkering and post-feedback changes, each map was created in 24 hours or less, hence the Japanese title, which translates to "one day." This limitation lends internal consistency to the length and depth of these maps without affecting Whoosh's creativity: as much as he respects tradition, his vision of Doom is a very particular one, and that's where his strength lies. In the spirit of Ichinichi's endeavor, I decided to limit each of today’s reviews to no more than one hundred words, not counting a special introduction for each map. Call it hyaku no kotoba.
