Hello there! I’m MtPain27, and this is Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Nova III, a Boom-compatible megawad released in 2020 by a team of entry-level mappers led by an up-and-coming slaughter aficionado named Scotty. Nova III was made without its series founder Kildeth or its unofficial MVP dobu gabu maru, and endured a long and somewhat troubled development cycle. Over a four-year period, project leadership bounced from an_mutt to AD_79 to Scotty, who finally got it idgames-ready. Nova III is more structured than The Birth or New Dawn, divided into hell, jungle, and moon episodes, and it's probably the hardest megawad in the series pound-for-pound. With Scotty at the helm, that comes as no surprise. Its lengthy gestation is partly responsible for this, but Nova III also has the series' most experienced lineup of mappers. By 2020, Paul977 had been shortlisted for a Cacoward, sincity2100 and antares031 already had full megawads under their belts, Benjogami, bemused, and Nanka Kurashiki were household names in various circles, and Killer5, yes, that Killer5, had already released Dimensions. The Nova series will always have a special place in my heart, but Nova III was my first so it's been the hardest one to Dean-of-Doom-ify. It has an otherworldly spirit that will appeal to TNT fanatics, and vaulting ambition that will...also appeal to TNT fanatics. I've been wanting to cover this megawad for three years, so let's get this show on the road.
