iFixIt wants to HACK McDonald's Ice Cream Machines

At the forefront of the Right to Repair movement is iFixIt. Their teardown guides are legendary and their tenacity is inarguable. Well, recently, they decided to purchase a Taylor Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine, the same model that gets memed on constantly due to their constant breakdowns at McDonald's restaurants across the globe.

The legends at iFixIt have set their sights on getting an exemption for the DMCA provisions which make it illegal to bypass the digital lockouts on machines like these. The needs of businesses to be able to quickly repair and ameliorate downtime is an important one, yet because it's a violation of the DMCA to bypass these types of lockouts, many businesses are forced to go to the vendor who can create artificial monopolies on servicing their products.

Thankfully, iFixIt has a great track record of lobbying the Library of Congress to pass exemptions for the anti-bypass measures. Hopefully they'll be successful.

Taylor Soft Serve machines have created their own monopoly over repair of their industrial ice cream machines in a way that's both anti-competitive and anti-right to repair.

So, that's where iFixIt steps in. They're here to take this allegedly malicious behavior to Congress and get it fixed. And I'm HERE for it.
