In Death Unchained - Oculus Quest
In Death Unchained
Superbright
Oculus Quest
(Locomotion added after video recorded)
Sometimes things just .......... just are, fit perfectly together, Dempsey & Makepeace, Starsky & Hutch, Mulder & Scully, you get the idea.
In Death is meant for the Oculus Quest, I played and enjoyed In Death on PSVR, but it is amazing just how the freedom of the Quest takes the experience to a whole new level, with even more content, a further Unchained is pretty much double in size to the PSVR version.
For those that haven't had the pleasure of playing In Death previously, you play an archer caught in purgatory attempting to escape, but to do so you you will need to battle all the other trapped souls and defeat them. Enemies range from zombie like creatures to teleporting monks and huge knights and everything inbetween. You have two choices of weapon, the bow, my particular favourite and crossbow. As you play through the game you collect the downed souls and gold, this enables you to purchase upgrades to your arrows or health. At times, getting headshots will release health or additional upgraded arrows.
Movement is currently teleportation only, but Superbright are working on an update as we speak that allows free locomotion. For me the teleportation works perfectly well, i like being able to fire off an arrow then teleport onto nearby roof to finish the enemy off. As well as a teleportation arrow you have a shard crystal that you are able to throw, i tend to use these to strafe left or right when in a stand off with an enemy. You are also able to equip a shield in your left hand by pressing the grip button, handy for blocking when under a barrage of arrows and flying axes.
The appearance of In Death will leave you thinking this can't be a quest game, the buildings are huge and look like full side cathedrals floating in the heavens. Levels are all procedurally generated, as are enemies so no two games are the same, meaning endless hours of gameplay. The textures of buildings look great even close up, there are stained glass windows that allow coloured light to pass through and allow you to see as enemies pass by. If there are any issues with textures it is normally on the floating snow covered rock islands, but when everything moves so smoothly this can be and should be forgiven.
Combat feels very fluid, your bow especially feels very responsive and you will be disappointed with yourself when you fail to get a dead cert long distance headshot. As you become more experienced with the bow you will find yourself heading into locations that you originally avoided and firing off shots rapidly, killing enemies before they have had a chance to respond. but just when you are beginning to get confident, the enemies become more frequent, the games difficulty adjusts to how you are playing. So play well one game, the next game you will see more stronger enemies early on.
So, if you are still reading this you I hope can tell how much i am loving this game, it becomes addictive very early on, there is a leaderboard so you can see how well you are doing compared to your friends or the best players in the world.
This game is right up there as one of my favourite, if not favourite experiences on the Quest. You should be downloading this already. Essential purchase.
