In Defense of Tencent
Tencent, the largest Chinese tech company is now the majority owner of the Polish video game developer Techland. This move comes as a surprise to many given the rocky relationship between the two companies.
The move was made public on Tuesday morning and Techland’s shares in WIG21, Warsaw Stock Exchange were immediately transferred to Tencent’s ownership. Tencent is reported to have paid 2 billion zlotys (around $460 million) for Techland.
This move comes after a difficult year for both companies. In May, it was reported that Techland had been working on a new proprietary game engine called the Warsaw Engine and that the project was behind schedule and over budget. In July, Techland lost
Techland sold majority ownership to Tencent. Some people were not too happy with Techlands decision. Tencent is this big boogeyman in the gaming industry. Why do people hate tencent so much? I think Tencent is much better than Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo atleast when it comes to this specific ownership of Techland. Techland had a disappointing launch for Dying Light 2. Techland are creating a new IP, techlands new IP which is an open world RPG will now have Tencents enormous funding to make it the best game Techland can ever make. This is great news for Techland.
