The Reserve Bank of India has revealed that as much as ₹15.28 lakh crore of the high-value currency that was demonetised on November 8, 2016 returned to the central bank. “Subject to future corrections, based on the verification process when completed, the estimated value of SBNs [specified bank notes] received as on June 30, 2017, is ₹15.28 trillion,” the RBI said in a report released on August 30.
The latest RBI data showed that 98.96% of the withdrawn currency — at the time of demonetisation the value of old ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes in circulation was ₹15.44 lakh crore — was deposited with the banks.
