Times are rough for Indie Studios, but Dead Mage with their game Children of Morta is thriving. After only a couple of days it has sold enough copies to cover the development costs.

Hey everyone this is Thyworm and today, I want to share this little success story and dive a little bit deeper into Children of Morta. I have about 6 hours in to this game and it’s a wonderful cute little title. It’s been getting a fair bit of attention, but with all the blockbusters out there currently, games like Borderlands 3, Greedfall, Gears 5 and even Blasphemous, you may not have noticed Children of Morta.

I’m planning a more in-depth video on this game, because it deserves as much, but just a quick overview of what we’re dealing with. Children of Morta is basically a pixel-art roguelite hack n slash action RPG with multiple characters, skill trees, procedurally generated levels and a pretty steep, but fair, difficulty level. You are playing as an entire family and you’re fighting the corruption that stirs under the mountain.

And the game is amazing, really. It’s super fun to try the ever-changing levels, which are really difficult, and it’s the type of game that is going to entertain me for a while I feel. Which is why I’m happy to hear that this game didn’t only receive critical acclaim, but now also has gained financial success. It’s sold enough copies to cover the development costs and from this moment forward, it will be a profitable game. Not bad, for a game that kickstarted with 108K dollars in 2015.
According to Steam Spy, between 20k and 50k copies were sold, which is between 400k and 1 million dollars of income. Tech Raptor calculated 65k copies even. According to LinkedIn, the company has between 10-20 employees, so give these people an average salary of 30k per year for a while and the math checks out fairly well. It’s all we got really to verify the press message I received, but my point is, the numbers seem to add up.

It doesn’t stop here, however. In a months’ time, Children of Morta will be released on consoles, which will increase revenue even more. And the Steam Sales are by no means dying either. All of this is good news, for 2 reasons, I feel.

First, Children of Morta proves that creating a quality indie game can still be profitable, which should inspire others out there to keep working on their creations. Indie devs have a hard time usually, finishing their products and getting them marketed, because there are so many games releasing these days. Children of Morta did all this very well, with multiple betas and rounds of testing, really polishing the experience. This certainly has contributed to their success.

Second, it’s good for the game itself. There are some features that still need to be implemented, like online co-op. But also people have been requesting for a new game + mode and other features that now might make it into the game, because funding is basically secured, at least for a while. The latest patches have been focusing on bug fixing, but I’m hopeful we’ll get also some content patches in the future.

If you haven’t picked this game up already, I can really recommend it. If you’re not sure yet, come and watch me play it on twitch.tv/Thyworm, Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 8PM CET. Catch me on Twitter for the latest news @thyworm and thanks so much for watching and making it to the end. I will see soon. Bye bye.
