Independent video game developers may not have the resources or be able to offer the same scale or quality as triple-A titles with millions of dollars spent on them, but since they're made by gamers without concern for reputation, future prospects of franchising and other corporate nonsense, they deliver the kind of experiences that gamers are after. More importantly, they are often inspired by an idea, and they try to convey this concept using a barebones approach. Simple games with unique ideas tend to be interesting because they focus on a single aspect of a game - be it story, a particular game mechanic etc. and will receive much praise despite being incomplete as a full package. Sometimes creativity comes from small ideas being explored in isolation rather than being lost in a sea of industry-standard checkboxes which need to be ticked (such as "Must have multiplayer").
