IndieView - Read Only Memories
9How do you know you have free will? That you are the master of your own destiny? That you make all your own decisions? Maybe you do, maybe it's an illusion. Read Only Memories deals with these concepts and more, such as racism, singularity, and more importantly, having a crappy landlord. ROM puts you in the middle of a cyberpunk mystery with the help of a young, and perhaps the first of a sentient race of machines, Turing. You must guide your new found robotic friend as you investigate his inventors mysterious disappearance. What makes ROM so awesome, is the rich atmosphere and subtle but important universe crafting. Each piece of scrap paper or advertisement gives you little insights to the world of Read Only Memories. As suddenly you are thrusted into a situation that involves political factions, over the top characters, and plenty of technological shenanigans. On top of the story, ROM also has amazing music and pixel art. Departing from the usual visual novel normals and bringing something unique and different but keeping a familiar tone. Last but not least is ROMs incredible soundtrack, that never got dull for me. It was like 80 techno pop on acid and I loved every minute of it and wanted more. The only gripe I have with ROM is the lack of using its space. Most of the game is seen in a small rectangle shape. While this isn't a huge deal, I felt like we could've been more immersed had the entire screen been filled with ROM's amazing art. Simply put, I wanted to see more of this cyberpunk universe. That isn't a bad thing.
