Infinite Doom - Part 1 (Doom The Way id Did, Guncaster, IDKFA, and more)
Doom. I shouldn't have to tell you how much I love it. I bring that up plenty. I compare other games to Doom. It is a near perfect game with such amazingly tight gameplay that thirty years later it still has a huge, creative community creating amazing things for it. And today I went to look at some of those amazing things.
I started with the map packs: Doom The Way id Did, and Ultimate Doom The Way id Did. Replacements for Ultimate Doom's 4 episodes designed by the community to be in the style of the original maps and their creators at Id. And... it's OK. Honestly, I think I prefer the base maps, as these have a bit too much "where am I going?", though it wasn't helped by the sequence breaking caused by the second mod.
Guncaster. Because I want to be a dragon. And, through the first three episodes, it seemed like a nice, fairly balanced mod. Your guns had limited ammo capacity, letting you rely on spells as well. A little bit of Bioshock as you can have a weapon in one hand and a spell ready in the other. But I was not prepared for what came after. Oh I was not prepared at all. The first three episodes, you only ever fight bosses as the very end of the episode. Fade to end screen, congratulations, take on the next challenge. So I was completely unaware of the power their drops contained. Hidden in treasure chests is ultimate power. And it gets absolutely absurd. By the end of the 4th episode, I was a dragon kaiju god in a mech suit towering over Cyberdemons and meleeing them to paste. And it. Was. Glorious. An absolute powertrip that's probably more designed for slaughter maps. That came out of nowhere for me and whoo boy when it hit I was having a BLAST!
I also included Andrew Hulshult's IDKFA music pack, which I highly recommend downloading as it comes with .mp3 and .flac versions as well. Also included were my usual Universal Damage Numbers, and the new standard I'll be carrying around, Graveyard.
And the best part? These mods are free. Technically, you don't even need Doom, as Freedoom exists, though the graphics will be significantly different. Everything else, the levels, the mods, the engine, is all available for free, so check it out! -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
