Inkscape is a quality SVG editor that runs on Linux, Mac and Windows systems and can be used to create or edit vector graphics like logos, diagrams, illustrations, graphics and anything else in between.
Inkscape has sophisticated drawing tools with comparable capabilities to Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW and Xara Xtreme. You can import and export various file formats including SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, PS and PNG.
It has a full feature set, a simple interface, multilingual support and is designed to be extensible, users can customize Inkscape's functionality with plug-ins.
The editor provides flexible drawing tools and supports reading and saving images in SVG, OpenDocument Drawing, DXF, WMF, EMF, sk1, PDF, EPS, PostScript and PNG formats.
Now Inkscape developers have released Inkscape 1.2.
What's New in Inkscape 1.2
Coming almost a year after Inkscape 1.1 , the Inkscape 1.2 release is here to introduce a new page tool that implements multi-page support in Inkscape documents.
To access the new Page tool, click the bottom button on the toolbar. The tool also allows you to import and export multi-page PDF documents.
Also new in Inkscape 1.2 is the 'Tiling' Live Path Effect (LPE) which allows for interactive tiling, the ability to import SVG images from Open Clipart, Wikimedia Commons and other online sources, screen alignment, as well as the ability to edit markers and stroke patterns.
Also, Inkscape 1.2 introduces selectable object origin for scale and numerical movement, merges the 'Layers' and 'Objects' dialogs into a new dialog, moves all alignment options into a single dialog, and redesigns the 'Export' dialog with the ability to select objects, layers or pages, preview and support for exporting various file formats.
Among other noteworthy changes, Inkscape now supports gradient editing in the 'Fill and Stroke' dialog, as well as gradient dither, which is used for exporting raster images and for displaying gradients on the screen.
The Text Tool has been updated in this release to support running text around shapes as well as text filling.
Also updated is the SVG Font Editor, whose Font Editor workflow now offers better previews, better performance, and a greater degree of organization.
Last but not least, Inkscape 1.2 introduces functionality that allows users to separate a path object consisting of multiple subpaths into a set of path objects that belong together, adds many new customization options, further improves the UI and fixes various bugs and issues to increase performance and faster application.
How to install or update Inkscape
Inkscape is available for Windows, Linux and macOS. Linux downloads point to an AppImage binary, a Snap package, and an Ubuntu/Linux Mint PPA.
While this is not mentioned on the Inkscape download page, the app can also be installed from Flathub, although it may not have been updated to the latest version yet.
