If you come across an operating system you can perform a clean install on an ssd or harddisk. That would be my first choice. On a desktop system you can easily switch the ssd or harddisk and do a clean install and really get the feeling how fast an operating system works.

If you do not want/can install it on an ssd, you can first install your operating system on a virtual box and see what it looks like before deciding to install it on an ssd.

We will show you where to download virtualbox. Change the settings and will later install Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon on it.

The installation of linux mint18.1 is being explained in this tutorial as sequel to this one.
