It's looking like Intel might have scrapped its plans for high-end Arc Battlemage graphics cards. These cards, based on the Xe2 architecture and codenamed "BMG-G31," were intended to compete in the higher end of the gaming GPU market.
According to a report from a reliable source, Intel decided to stop working on the high-end Battlemage GPU around the third quarter of 2024. While some of these chips might have been shipped out towards the end of last year, it seems they were just for testing, and the idea of releasing these cards to the public was abandoned much earlier.
The BMG-G31 GPU was expected to be more powerful than the GPUs in the existing Arc B580 and B570 cards. It was rumored to have around 24 to 32 Xe2 cores, a 256-bit memory interface, and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory.
There's also no news about Intel's next-generation "Celestial" Xe3 discrete GPUs. While the Xe3 architecture will be used in Intel's upcoming Panther Lake CPUs, those are integrated graphics. It's uncertain if we'll see separate Celestial GPUs for desktops or laptops.
However, the article points out that things can change. A previous Intel project, the Arrow Lake Refresh, was thought to be canceled but is now back on track. So, there's a small chance the high-end Battlemage could reappear later.
Also, just because Intel isn't talking about Celestial GPUs right now doesn't mean they're not coming. The same source who reported the Battlemage cancellation previously said that the Xe3 "Celestial" and Xe4 "Druid" GPUs are still in development for separate graphics cards. So, there's still hope for Intel to make a bigger impact in the GPU market in the future.
For now, it seems Intel will focus its graphics efforts on integrated GPUs and offering more budget-friendly discrete cards like the Arc B580 and B570, which have been competitive in their price range.
