Interview with Daskiel from Final Fantasy XIV Online
Daskiel is an MMORPG player from Austria who has been playing Final Fantasy 14 Online for a little over 3 months when I caught up with him for an interview. He joined a guild on the Cactuar server called the Casual Adventure Team (CAT) and has leveled a few jobs on a character and continued thorugh a significant amount of the story.
He compared the community of the game to a few other online communities as extremely friendly, esepcially in comparison to highly compeitive communities such as League of Legends, which is considered one of the most hostile across gaming spaces. During our talk we spoke about how Final Fantasy offers numerous spaces for membership to congregate and attempts to provide places for people to gather with different types of social media, for example guildes (called Free Companies, such as CAT), chat systems (called Link Shells), and even in game forums.
New players are also displayed prominently to other players with an icon that looks like a small leaf on their name that bears them the name nomenclature "sprout" by mentor players.
Daskiel is a relatively new player to FFXIV and the CAT free company but has expressed a great deal of enthusiasm about his role in the free company and the guild and his time in FFXIV. I look forward to learning more about his journey.
Fore more information about CAT and its membership, I have written a small amount about them in an article for Vox Ex Machina.
